It was my honor to attend the 35th Annual General Meeting of the World Squash Federation (WSF) held recently in Bahia, Brazil. The workshop discussions in advance of the meeting focused on basic issues of branding, sponsorship and event marketing. An acknowledgement of the challenges squash will face in growing worldwide combined with a palpable sense of optimism and potential pervaded the discussions.
The world sees the US as the growth opportunity so turning locally to the United States, we are more focused than ever to do our part in promoting the game. Essential to accomplishing this task is running successful events and this month we will host the second largest Junior Open worldwide. The 2005 U.S. Junior Open Squash Championships boasts nearly 500 players from 15 countries.
As we build our own tournaments, opportunities to host other international competitions such as the World Team Championships and World Junior Championships are around the corner and these events will provide premier marketing opportunities for the sport.

North American Open
Squash Championships
November 8-13, 2005
After losing last year's finals here, Canada’s Shahier Razik returned to San Francisco to defeat Mark Chaloner to win the $20,000 Tennyson West North American Open.
Throughout the tournament, the 28-year-old fourth seed from Toronto relied on his quickness and fitness to wear down opponents. In a spectacular semi-final, Razik overcame a two-game deficit to defeat second-seeded Welshman Alex Gough 7-11 7-11 11-1 11-7 11-4.
The North American Open and the Giving on the "T" Foundation, in partnership with the Western Athletic Clubs, provided seed grants of $200,000 to support the Bay Area-based Sports 4 Kids and USSRA programs to bring squash to underserved youth.
